The story of Joanna Gillott's father

Dear Professor Plant

I am writing to you about my father. He was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer 6 weeks ago - this was shattering news to all of us. My grandparents are long-living (his own father is still alive and well at 94) and we don't really have any history of cancer in our family. My father has been fit and well all his life (never taking a day off sick), he used to Row for England, he took up skiing at the age of 58, goes to the gym most days and people have always commented on how young he looks for his age. As you can imagine, his diagnosis was the LAST thing we envisaged. He is 69 years of age now. Like you, he is from a Science background.

Over a few months my father developed terrible back ache and started tolose quite a bit of weight (two stone in total, when he has always been14 stone!). Nevertheless, he still went off skiing 8 weeks ago and had a wonderful time. He came back feeling quite well, but then the backache returned. My mother has been asking him to go for a PSA test for quite a few years, just as a matter of course. He didn't do this, mainly because he's always been so well and never goes to see his doctor. Last year he did go for the Digital rectum examination and his doctor couldn't find anything to indicate he had a tumour.

Anyway, 6 weeks ago he went for his PSA test and a week later he was called in as a matter of urgency. Not only was my father's PSA reading extremely high, the doctor said it was the highest he'd ever seen. It was 1500! The doctor told my father that it was quite obvious he had Prostate Cancer and that it had undoubtedly spread to the bones (all other tests indicated it hadn't gone to the organs).

This was devastating news for all of us. As you can imagine, we searched high and low for some positive literature on combating Prostate Cancer. We thank God that my friend put your book on Prostate Cancer in front of me. She urged me to read it, as she feels it has saved her own husband who has also got Prostate Cancer. I read it from cover to cover in aday and then passed it over to my father. Ever since, your book has been our bible. From that day on, my father cut out ALL dairy and meat from his diet. I have done the same. It makes complete sense that animal milk carries these hormones which will have a huge impact on our own hormonal activity and Cancer cells. I have since red The Milk Letter and was horrified even further that our governments are allowing us all to poison ourselves like this!

My father is a strong person with a deep faith and he has his own mind - 6 weeks down the line and he is still following your diet. I went out and bought your recipe book and my mother uses that, as do I. It is packed full of delicious, healthy recipes - once again, proving that you don't have to have dairy to enjoy your food! It is shocking just how much dairy is inour Western diet. Even some soya products have milk in them. We have to check everything so carefully.

Anyway, I must move on to the reason I am emailing you. My father went for his 2nd PSA last week and we got the results a few days later. His PSA levels have gone down from 1500 to 4.7! That is in 6 weeks! He is also on the Prostap injection which we know is obviously working, but we believe that the diet is playing a huge part. I think even the doctor was surprised by such a drop. Dad's levels of phosphastase (I think that's how you spell it!) in his bones have gone down from 650 to 150 in the same time. We hope and pray this good news continues. Furthermore, when my father was first diagnosed, he had a lot of other tests - he was found to be high in Cholesterol and had an under active thyroid. This second lot of tests have revealed that his Cholesterol is now lower than it's been in years and his thyroid is back to normal! Now surely that has a lot to do with the diet too! That change has happened in SIX weeks!

I will confess, my father has been a lover of milk, cheese and butter all his life. My own grandfather and grandmother have loved it too and they haven't experienced any roblems at all. However, obviously with my father something triggered the cells off. It may not have just been his consumption of dairy, but a number of other things too.

We want to believe so much that my dad's new dairy free diet will be his saviour and we believe in your book 100%. .

Finally I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing your findings on dairy with the world and hope and pray it continues to help my father.

Very best and heartfelt wishes

Joanna Gillot
