Leo S's story

(letter sent to us by Oddur Benediktsson)

Oddur:

By chance I came across your interesting website on prostate cancer and the Jane Plant diet, which I have been teaching to my students in Health Psychology for three years, and use in my own life. It is strange that the medical establishment has failed so far to conduct experimental studies on this rather powerful theory, because the epidemiological evidence is impressive.

A recent related and very detailed book is “Foods that fight cancer” by Beliveau and Gingras. They are leading scientists in food/cancer links, working at the Universite du Quebec at Montreal. I strongly recommend it. For example, they explain how some green tea (from Japan) is much better than from China.

I am a professor of psychology at Bishop’s University in Quebec, still working at age 67. Four years ago I was diagnosed with a Gleason 7 tumour (4+3), but fairly early. I subsequently took hormone therapy, external radiation and brachytherapy. At this point I adopted the Plant diet. As shown in my chart, PSA dropped to almost nothing, but then has crept back up slightly.

However, this summer it dropped to less than half (from .05 to .02) in three months. If this is a real drop, I believe it may be because I exposed myself this summer to a lot of sunshine (the helpful effect of vitamin D is receiving attention these days). Also, one aspirin tablet per day is probably good according to recent studies. And of course one can take diet supplements like vitamins E (also C and A), selenium, lycopene, omega-3 fish oils, and garlic, which all have some support in the literature.

With regard to your chart, I would say that the biggest beneficial effect is probably due to the hormone therapy, but hopefully the Plant diet is helping also. I hope that things for you look good currently.

There is an experimental treatment using a new light-activated drug (Tookad) which is showing good results in Canada (Montreal) and the UK (London) with men who have experienced a recurrence of prostate cancer. (I do not know whether this can be applied to a lymph node as well as the prostate itself). Certainly I am bearing this in mind as a future route for myself, if needed.

With best wishes,

Leo S
